I'm not totally sure about it but Star Citizen isn't an MMO and won't be based around microtransactions for that sort of stuff.

You do not need multiple characters for a line of inheritance. In fact, an additional character will most likely NOT be able to inherit from another.

I'm really intrigued by this, I don't think many of my friends will have this game at release, or will ever play it for that matter.

So it's important to me to still try and do my own thing, but with a crew of my own. I just hope the AI are competent enough to fly ships alone.
